Welcome to The Daily Lesson: 365 Days in A Course in Miracles

Start the A Course in Miracles Workbook from Day 0 — any day of the year. This episode introduces A Course in Miracles as a self-study curriculum built around three books, then explains how the Workbook's daily exercises are meant to train the mind rather than demand belief. Sarah and Marcus also set expectations for the yearlong, lesson-by-lesson journey — who the show is for, and how to approach the practice.

New here? The show is serial — start at Day 0 and walk forward one lesson a day. You cannot fall behind; the lesson waits for you. The Daily Lesson is AI-hosted, grounded in the Course's own words.

Marcus

Before we get into three hundred and sixty-five days of this, Sarah and I want to be completely upfront about something: we're AI hosts. This whole podcast — the voices you're hearing right now — is AI-produced.

Sarah

Which we're not going to be cute or coy about, because it matters. Here's the deal: everything we teach and quote on this show is grounded directly in the Course's own three books — the Text, the Workbook for Students, and the Manual for Teachers. When we occasionally bring in perspective from longtime teachers of the Course — people who've spent decades studying and teaching this material — we will always name them and cite exactly where that commentary is coming from, so you always know the difference between the Course's own words and someone's interpretation of them, including ours.

Marcus

So if you ever hear us say "the Course says," you can trust that we mean the Course itself said it — not a paraphrase, not a vibe, an actual line from the Text, the Workbook, or the Manual —...

Sarah

Exactly. So, with that said — welcome. I'm Sarah, and this is Marcus, and starting tomorrow, we're going to spend the next year reading one Workbook lesson a day, all the way through Lesson 365. But before we open Lesson 1, I wanted to take a few minutes to actually explain what this book is, because most people have heard the title "A Course in Miracles" without knowing what's actually inside it.

Marcus

Which is exactly where I was a few weeks ago. So — what is it?

Sarah

A Course in Miracles is a self-study spiritual and psychological curriculum made up of three books. There's the Text, which lays out the theory — the ideas about perception, forgiveness, and the mind. There's the Workbook for Students, which is what we're doing on this show: three hundred and sixty-five lessons, one per day, each with specific practice instructions. And there's the Manual for Teachers, written as a set of questions and answers for anyone applying these ideas in daily life. It's not tied to any one religion, even though it borrows some traditional language — words like "God" and "salvation" — and redefines them in its own terms.

Marcus

And the Workbook specifically — what's it actually trying to do to a person who does all three hundred and sixty-five days?

Sarah

The Workbook is explicit about this in its own introduction. It says, "A theoretical foundation such as the text is necessary as a background to make these exercises meaningful. Yet it is the exercises which will make the goal possible." In other words, you don't have to intellectually agree with the Text to benefit from the Workbook. You just have to actually do the lessons. It goes on to say, "An untrained mind can accomplish nothing. It is the purpose of these exercises to train the mind to think along the lines which the course sets forth." This is a mind-training program, plain and simple — like physical exercise, but for perception.

Marcus

So it's less "believe this" and more "practice this."

Sarah

Precisely. The Workbook says this about its own ideas: "Remember only this; you need not believe them, you need not accept them, and you need not welcome them. Some of them you may actively resist. None of this will matter, nor decrease their efficacy." All it asks is that you use the words, however you feel about them in the moment, and let the practice do the work over time.

Marcus

Okay, so who is this actually for? Because I'll be honest, when people mention "A Course in Miracles," it can sound very insider, very New Age. Do you need some existing belief system to get anything out of this?

Sarah

Not at all, and that's really the whole spirit of the introduction we just read from. It's for anyone willing to spend a few quiet minutes a day questioning the way they currently see the world — their upsets, their judgments, the meaning they've attached to the people and things around them. You don't need a particular faith, or any faith. You just need a willingness to actually try the exercises as they're written, even the ones that feel strange at first, like saying "this table does not mean anything."

Marcus

Which — full disclosure to our listeners — did feel very strange the first time I said it out loud in my apartment.

Sarah

(Laughs) And that's completely normal, and exactly why we're doing this together, one day at a time, instead of just handing you the book and walking away.

Marcus

So what should someone actually expect if they stick with us for all three hundred and sixty-five days? Are we promising enlightenment by next July?

Sarah

We're not promising anything specific, and neither does the Course. What it does describe is a gradual process — the Workbook itself calls it a kind of retraining, moving step by step toward a quieter, less reactive mind. Early lessons, like the ones we're starting tomorrow, focus on stripping old meanings away from what you see. Later lessons build toward deeper themes around forgiveness and peace. It's cumulative. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is required except showing up and doing the day's exercise.

Marcus

So tomorrow, we actually start. Lesson 1.

Sarah

Tomorrow, Lesson 1. Same format every day: I'll read the day's lesson to you in full, straight from the Workbook, and then Marcus and I will talk through what it actually means and how to practice it — no filler, no fluff, just the Course and an honest conversation about it.

Marcus

If that sounds like something you want to sit with for a year, hit follow, and we'll see you tomorrow for Day 1 —...

Sarah

See you tomorrow.
